Cool digs on getting the painting done! Did Ya get caught? LOL When you were getting it back together the way you wanted, did you remove the carb, or leave it on the motor? Don't worry, nobody thinks you are an idiot. The only dumb question is the one that is never asked, that's why I ask so many (trying to not look unintelligent--oops, cat's out of the bag now!) If you took the carb off, you may have a problem with the float level. A buddy of mine, with nothing better to do during one long Michigan winter, completely dismantled his perfectly running 1400 Intruder, motor, carbs, EVERYTHING, and went crazy customizing, painting, fabricating, typical cabin fever stuff--LOL This guy is a fanatic when it comes to labeling parts as he removes them. When he put it all back together, he couldn't get it to run worth a dang. He narrowed it down to the carbs, which he took apart and put back together TWICE without solving the problem. Seems that while in his shop over the winter, he had moved the dismantled parts around on his work bench from time to time and the arms on the float levels inside the carbs had become slightly bent. He got the proper caliper and reset them correctly and it ran like a champ once again. Could be that is your problem, even if you left the carb on the motor. Or, it isn't entirely impossible that while running without a filter you could have sucked something into the carb. Does it make a difference when you pull the choke out? Same, better, worse? Had a piolt jet get plugged up once and the bike wouldn't run worth a flip unless I pulled the choke out all the way. Matter of fact, that's how I rode it home, on full choke. Sounds like you may need to take a look see inside that carb.
